Incredible Paper Planes
Saturday, June 18, 2011; 1-4 PM
Prepare for high-flying fun this June at the Pence Gallery! Artist Christopher Beer will teach the art of making the perfect paper airplane. Instruction will include a brief introduction about aerodynamics and what makes a paper plane work. With several model templates to choose from, and many fun supplies to stylize and decorate, kids will fashion and fly a variety of artistic flying machines. We will then test the planes for speed and distance in the courtyard behind the Pence!
Ages 5 and up are welcome. Cost: $4 Members/ $6 Non-Members. Please RSVP by June 16.

Dog-Gone Dog Art
Saturday, August 6, 2011; 1-4 PM
Inspired by the colorful canine art of Roy de Forest, children will paint temporary murals outside. Enjoy creating colorful dogs on our sidewalks with chalk, or make a dog portrait. Check out sby both Roy de Forest and artists who were inspired by his style, in our exhibit Marking the Territory. Any age is welcome! Cost: $5 Members/$7 nonmembers. RSVP by August 4, or just come!

Summer Programs
Two Great Summer Courses For Ages 10 to Teen!
Following last year's successful summer programs, we are inviting back Jed Alexander to teach his two courses: How to Draw Words and Write Pictures, and Illustration and Storytelling. These six week courses offer a great way to build skills essential for communicating effectively through a visual dialog. Artist Workshop: Encaustics with Adele Shaw
On Sunday, June 26 from 12-4 PM, Adele Shaw will bring students into the world of encaustic painting. This workshop will include a demo on tool use and materials, the fundamentals of encaustic painting, and will focus on layering beeswax medium, encaustic paint, and collage elements. Students will create encaustic paintings while incorporating personal collage materials. This workshop is appropriate for beginning or experienced painters. Fee: $110 nonmembers/ $100 Pence members. ArtSmart Program
In the ArtSmart school program, students learn about the rich history of art through active participation in hands-on art projects and discussion. Through guided viewing of art, students will develop skills in critical thinking and visual perception. Choose from two different projects to focus on:
Ceramics: Inspired by Nature The art of clay is one that is full of experimentation and fun. Students will view the amazing ceramics by well-known ceramic artists David Kuraoka, Don Reitz, and Michelle Gregor, and make an abstract ceramic sculpture inspired by nature. Imagine loads of clay, glazes, and getting your hands dirty!

TO REGISTER: Call 530-758-3370 to register your class. Fee is $5/student, which includes tour, supplies, and instruction; $40 firing fee per group for ceramics. Time: 9:30-11:30 am
Reservations should be made at least 2 weeks in advance and are confirmed with payment. Each group needs two chaperones in addition to the teacher. Groups up to 35 students can be accommodated. Homeschool groups are welcome! Teachers are encouraged to preview exhibit content before their visit.
