Education
in the visual arts is one of the main
purposes of the Pence Gallery.
Frequent lectures given by the
exhibiting guest artists or curator is
an important part of each show. The
Gallery also offers an art lecture
series for adults, provides annual Art
Smart programs for children, and
provides a curatorial fellowship for
university students.
Art
Smart
Third,
fourth and fifth grade students from
Davis schools have the opportunity to
partake in an art history program
called Art Smart. This program is
conducted by informed and personable
guides who introduce concepts of
contemporary art while sharing the
importance of viewing art in a gallery
setting. A hands-on art experience
relating to the current exhibit is
offered.
Brunelle
Curatorial Fellowship
The
Brunelle Curatorial Fellowship is
offered to qualified college-age
students seeking to enter the
museum/gallery profession. Fellows
work closely with the Director on all
aspects of gallery management and also
study current literature relating to
exhibitions, curating collections, and
arts administration.
Kids
Create!
Kids
Create! is a program developed to
provide an opportunity for children,
in some cases along with their
parents, to participate in a hands-on
art experience. Classes coincide with
exhibitions on view and often involve
working directly with artists. Week
long classes in various art skills are
offered during the month of August.
Summer
Studio
Adults
can participate in the Summer Studio
Workshop two consecutive Saturdays in
August. A featured artist-in-residence
teaches an intimate group in a
supportive setting. Participants then
hang their works in the gallery for
enjoyment and review. Featured artists
have included pastel artist, Kristine
Bybee, and sculptor, Donna Billick.
