One of the Pence’s long-standing audiences has been children and youth. From early on in its history, Pence staff and volunteers developed programs to educate and serve our younger visitors.
For twenty-five years, the Pence has also organized a Community Hang Up for adults, so that we can share the artistic wealth of our public in an inclusive way. As our numbers of participating artists have been diminishing in this nonjuried display, we decided to bring back the Kids Community Hang-Up exhibit. Last held in 2004, this year’s Hang-Up brings together the paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculpture of over fifty children and youth. From the youngest at four, to the oldest at fourteen, the exhibit is a snapshot into the people, places, and ideas that are important to our children.
It is vital that children get an opportunity to view their work in a professional setting, and learn about the ways in which adult artists and galleries operate. One of our favorite questions from kids was, “Why do I give you money if my piece sells?” Sometimes the answers aren’t nearly as charming as the questions that kids direct to us.
If you didn’t hear about the Kids Community Hang-Up, please join as a member to get notifications, or sign up for our free email list downstairs at the front desk.
This exhibit is sponsored by Dick & Joy Dorf.
